Short summary for the KIMEP website/blog:
The Legal Aspects of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a political, economic, and security alliance which was established in 2001 between China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Professor Atadjanov discusses and explains the relevant legal aspects of the cooperation between the four Central Asian countries under the treaty. The presentation covers the treaty’s international legal basis, its main legal instruments and documents and also the legal basis for the workings of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in the region. It reviews the legal aspects of the main thematic areas where the SCO is active in Central Asia: security-related issues, counterterrorism, drug crimes, military, economic and cultural cooperation.
Professor Atadjanov’s monograph on the concept of humanity in international criminal law and crimes against humanity was published with the T.M.C. Asser Press / Springer in June 2019.
