STEP 1. APPLY ON-LINE

Portal for applicants is available 24/7, 365 days a year

1. Fill in the online application at the applicants’ portal: https://www.kimep.kz/ext/application/online/en-US/
2. Upload the scanned copy of your passport to the portal
3. Upload the valid copies of IELTS/TOEFL certificates, if any
4. Digital photo
   Uploading your digital photo into the “Photo” field is very important, because all KIMEP units will use this picture of yours for your personal identification. The digital photo with a resolution of 300 ppi (pixels per inch) with a size of
   no less than 8 MP (Megapixels) in JPEG format with low compression (high quality).
5. In order to apply for scholarships or financial aid you will have to upload the copies of your certificates or awards for Republican and/or International Olympiads and competitions, that you have received during 9 to 11 school grades

STEP 2. FILL IN THE “INTERVIEW” SECTION AT THE APPLICANTS’ PORTAL

After your online application will be received by our Student Recruitment and Admissions Office staff a personal Student ID number will be assigned to you and the block of information titled “Interview” which is mandatory to be filled in will be opened. In this section several questions will be offered which you will have to answer in writing in English. Each answer should contain no more than 300 words.

STEP 3: UPLOAD COPIES OF MAIN DOCUMENTS

Documents mentioned in this section should be submitted right after receiving the appropriate authentic documents

1. Copy of you Certificate of General Secondary Education with a supplement
2. Bank statement demonstrating the availability of the amount sufficient to cover KIMEP tuition expenses at least for 1 semester (the amount of no less than USD 3 000) or the letter of awarding the scholarship for education
3. Criminal record (according to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Migration)

STEP 4. SUBMIT AUTHENTIC DOCUMENTS TO THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE

Documents mentioned in this section should be submitted upon arrival to the university:

1. Authentic Certificate of General Secondary Education with a supplement*

*Academic credentials issued by the foreign academic institutions should be accompanied by the notarized translation into Kazakh or Russian language and undergo the procedure of nostrification /recognition during the first academic semester of study.

Submit authentic medical documents to KIMEP Medical Center

1. Medical Certificate – Form # ф-075/у (students coming from other cities may receive it in Almaty)
2. KIMEP Medical Center may request a notarized translation of the medical certificate equivalent therefore international students are recommended to undergo a medical examination upon arrival to Almaty. The Form should include conclusions from a general practitioner, surgeon, neurologist, ENT-doctor and the results of microreaction blood test, as well as the original chest X-ray shot which should have two signatures and two stamps by doctors (the certificate is valid if issued no earlier than 6 months ago).

STEP 5. IDENTIFY YOUR ENGLISH PROFICIENCY LEVEL

To take the KEPT test you will have to fill in the online application and upload the copy of your passport to the applicants’ portal: https://www.kimep.kz/ext/application/online/en-US/

The applicant submitting the valid international certificates are released from taking the KEPT.

STEP 6: LEARN ABOUT THE ADMISSION DECISION AND SIGN THE CONTRACT FOR EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

1. Since e-mail is an official communication channel of KIMEP University to inform the applicant the e-mail address indicated in the online application form should be active at the moment of becoming admitted to KIMEP U.
2. Notice of Admission to KIMEP University will be sent to your e-mail, as well as placed at the applicants’ portal in «Acceptance Package» section.
3. The Contract for Educational Services will also be placed at your applicants’ portal in «Acceptance Package» section. Two printed out and signed copies of the Contract should be submitted to the University Admissions Office before the end of the period of registration for courses.

Special requirements for foreign citizens

KIMEP University follows the North American model of education with the flexible online registration system in place. Each KIMEP student knows that early registration for courses is a tangible advantage because it provides you with an opportunity to choose needed courses and favorite professors teaching them, suitable time slots, and in the end to build the most convenient schedule for the coming semester. That is why all KIMEP students strive to register for courses as soon as the registration period is open.

KIMEP University followed the needs of the new students/their parents, and further developed and introduced the BELA (Bachelor of Early Admission) status under which all new students will be able to enjoy early registration for Fall semester courses.

 Advantages of BELA:

• Early registration for Fall semester courses without waiting for the official admission period
• Composing of the convenient Fall semester class schedule in accordance with your personal preferences
• Freeing and spending the quality time with your family during the rest of the Summer

To obtain the BELA status the following requirements need to be fulfilled:

• Receive passing scores with a valid combination of the specialized subjects on UNT and fill in the UNT section in your applicant portal by indicating the scores received and ITC number
• IDENTIFY YOUR ENGLISH PROFICIENCY LEVEL by taking KEPT or by filling in the scores of the valid international certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo in the “International Certificates” section of your applicant portal
• Submit the authentic high school/vocational school diploma to KIMEP University Admissions Office by physical bringing to the office or by sending it by post service to the following address: 050010, Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan

• Sign the “BELA” Contract

If “BELA” applicant decides to leave the university he/she should withdraw from the courses (if there are any registration), apply for withdrawal from the university and refund by the end of add-drop period.

ALL students given the access to early registration for Fall semester courses under BELA status will be transferred to the regular status automatically once the official admission order is issued in the specified period of time, in August.

The IB Diploma Program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The program is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.

IB Diploma Program students study six courses at higher level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5.

In addition the program has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding: the extended essay, theory of knowledge, and creativity, action, service component.

TRANSFER of CREDITS FOR IB GRADUATES

KIMEP University recognizes secondary students’ participation in the International Baccalaureate Program and awards college credit for completion of higher level and standard level courses that show grades of four, five, six, and seven corresponding to GE courses offered at KIMEP. Moreover, direct placement to academic courses is granted to those IB diploma holders whose final score is 24 and above (out of 45).

With some variation by degree program, the IB graduates will be given credit for the following courses:

1. Academic Listening and Note Taking (automatic transfer with the total score of 24 and above)
2. Academic Reading and Writing I (automatic transfer with the total score of 24 and above)
3. Academic Reading and Writing II (for students who obtain an IELTS score of 7 or higher)

The maximum number of transfer credits per student is 27 (6 subjects of IB program + 9 credits of KIMEP English Language courses).

Admission criteria and steps

Almost all disciplines at KIMEP are taught in English. This means that before starting the main disciplines, students must have a sufficiently high proficiency in the language of instruction.

The KIMEP Foundation Program aims to develop students’ language skills and competencies necessary to achieve academic success.

The program consists of three levels of Preparatory English.
Each level requires 225 hours of class work, as well as self-study outside of class. Students not only work to improve their English proficiency, but they also acquire the skills necessary for successful learning, better time management, and self-study.

Foundation courses are required and involve intensive practice of English in four different aspects (speaking, listening, reading, writing), as well as the development of academic skills, problem solving and critical thinking.

How is the number of English levels required to master the foundation program determined?

There are three levels of English in the Foundation program. An applicant will study at the level that corresponds to the results of the KIMEP English Placement Test (KEPT). Each applicant can re-take the KEPT for a better result. Only two takes are allowed. If an instructor believes that applicant’s English proficiency is higher than his/her KEPT result, then a recommendation is given to move up to the level corresponding to applicant’s proficiency.

Is it possible to skip required Foundation program? What happens if a student gets an unsatisfactory result after completion of the program?

It is not possible to skip the program since it is a required component of an academic program. Foundation program will have to be retaken in the case of unsatisfactory completion.

What can the University do if an applicant was short several points to receive an exemption from the Foundation A level program?

In this case an applicant can go through the verification procedure, the results of which may affect applicant’s situation and he/she may receive an exemption from the Foundation program. For all questions:

English is not the admission criteria. However, the choice of language of instruction at KIMEP University is English and therefore proof of English proficiency is mandatory.
However, as teaching at KIMEP University is done exclusively in English, therefore, defining the level of English proficiency is mandatory. Students that did not undergo a procedure of defining their English proficiency start their studies from a zero level (UF C).
For defining the level of English proficiency KIMEP University accepts international English proficiency test certificates

• TOEFL (Code of KIMEP University for the examination is 2104)
• IELTS
• Cambridge English Examinations
• KIMEP English Placement Test (is held during the year at KIMEP University in Almaty and in other major cities of Kazakhstan)

CEFR* – Common European Framework of Reference (Common European competencies of foreign language proficiency: studying, learning, assessment)

The KIMEP University Admission and Scholarship Committee reviews applications for academic programs separately from applications for financial aid.
Admission to academic programs of KIMEP University does not guarantee financial aid to applicants.
The Admission and Scholarship Committee is the standing committee of the KIMEP Academic Council. It sets the policies and procedures for the financial aid. KIMEP University Financial Aid Program.

The Financial Aid Office sets the deadlines and requirements for the submission of documents to receive financial support.
KIMEP students may also apply for external funds and tri-lateral contracts. Students willing to apply for external funds should contact the department of Corporate Development of KIMEP University.
The Corporate Development Office deals with sources of external funding and manages trilateral contracts.
