Scholarships for newly admitted students

Financial aid program for 2019-2020 academic year

Undergraduate

The number of Scholarships funded by KIMEP University for each undergraduate program for winners of the Intellectual Olympiad, organized by the KIMEP University:
– 100% Scholarship for 1 place of Olympiad for 4 academic years;
– 50% Scholarship for 2 place of Olympiad for 4 academic years:

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPANTS
High school/vocational schools of the Republic of Kazakhstan seniors with any citizenship at their graduating year are eligible to participate.
Applicants with only “4” and “5” grades (out of 5.0 attainable within) in the tabel/transcript/record book of last two academic years prior graduation are eligible.

Application Package:
– completed Application Form of applicant;
– 1 Passport size photo (3*4);
– copy of identity card / passport;
– confirmation from the school/vocational schools that the candidate is a student of this year’s graduating class;
– official tabel/transcript/record book of last two academic years prior graduation must be verified with an official high school/vocational school stamp;
Important! Only candidates who have completed the online application with a full package of downloaded scanned documents will be eligible to participate in the competition.

Deadline for apply – March 25, 2019

Important! The participants are expected to arrive to KIMEP 1 hour prior to the official start up time that will be announced later.
The participants should present the ID cards to the staff member in charge of registration and hard copy or soft copy exam entrance ticket.

BEHAVIOR DURING THE OLYMPIAD

– Competitors may only ask questions pertaining to linguistic difficulties.
– The examiner has the right to disqualify the participant of the Olympiad for violating the conduct rules during the exam, including for any type of cheating.
– Appeals on the content, structure and evaluation system of the completed Olympiad assignments, taken sanctions against Olympiad participants who violated the rules of participation in the Olympiad are not considered.
– It is strictly prohibited to use mobile phones or any other electronic devices as well as non-official paper or cheat-sheets.

PROCEDURE OF OLYMPIAD CONDUCT

Intellectual Olympiad, organized by the KIMEP University consist of 2 stages:

Stage 1. English Examination – March 30, 2019

Important! IELTS/TOEFL certificates do not exempt Olympiad participants from English exam.

The time limit for the test is 60 minutes for computer-based test or 75 minutes for paper-based test.

This exam is a test of “reading and understanding in context”.
Exam structure:
– type 1 text – students will be asked to choose the most suitable heading, from a given list, for each part of the article.
– type 2 text – students will be asked to identify, from a given list, the correct sentences which fit into gaps in a text.
– type 3 text – a text with about 7 questions will be provided. For each question, students will be asked to accurately identify meanings in the text.

The total number of assignments to three texts is 20. Each of the tasks is estimated at 5 points. The number of points scored for each text is summarized to obtain a total score for the exam. Thus, the maximum score is 100.

Important! Only 20 best program candidates with a minimum score of 60% will pass to the second stage of competition.

Stage 2. History or Mathematics Examination: March 31, 2019

The candidates who have scored 60 points and higher in the English language exam are invited to the second stage of the Olympiad – the Mathematics or History exam.
The candidates applying for the Bachelor degree in Accounting and Audit, Management, Marketing, Finance, Public and Municipal Administration, Economics and Information systems – will take Mathematics exam.
The candidates applying for Bachelor degree in International Relations, Journalism, Jurisprudence, International Law, Translation studies and Foreign languages – will take History exam.
Important! History and Mathematics competitions will be in English. The minimum passing score for the Mathematics and History exam is 50%.
Mathematics exam

The Exam duration is 3 hours.

The Mathematics Olympiad competitors are judged on their ability in solving Mathematics problems that are drawn from high school Mathematics curricula. These problems are nonstandard, and comparable to “classical” Olympiad type. Competitors are expected to demonstrate their logical and analytical thinking.
Exam structure:
– 2 easy problems, based on high school program (worth 10 points each);
– 2 medium problems using logical thinking (worth 15 points each);
– 2 advanced problems of Olympiad level (worth 25 points each).
Evaluation criteria:
The Olympiad Selection Committee will make decision regarding each competitor’s grades in Mathematics. Competitors in the field of Mathematics are expected to provide full detailed solutions and answers to the problems they were asked in their paper. Original and creative solutions will be encouraged and appreciated.

To prepare for the Mathematics Exam, you can use the following sources:

4) pdf-file in Russian “The tasks of mathematical olympiads. I.L.Babinskaya” with the answers inside;

History exam

The Exam duration is 3 hours.

Exam structure:
test, includes 30 multiple choice questions about World History, mainly covering international relations system before and after World War II. The questions are divided into three groups:
a) 10 fundamental questions are estimated by 1 point each;
b) 10 intermediate questions are estimated by 1.5 point each;
c) 10 advanced questions are estimated by 2 point each;
Thus, the total amount of points is equal to 45.

writing essay in English. The essay should be written by hand (the amount of essay should not exceed 750 words, A4 format). Writing the essay is divided into the following stages: task setting, brainstorming, planning, writing, reviewing and writing the final version with all improvements.
The preparatory stage of essay writing should include work on the thematic literature, analysis and clarification of the topic that are concluded by the elaboration of the necessary proving arguments for proposed conclusions.
The finished essay should be in line with the following requirements:
1) Is the introduction short, clear and corresponds to the topic?
2) Do you formulate one main and clear question in each paragraph?
3) Are the paragraphs represented in a logical sequence?
4) What evidences and proofs do you use?
5) Do you avoid repetitions and generalizations?
6) Is you conclusion brief and relevant to the topic?
Essay is estimated by 55 points. 30 points are given if the presented essay is written in accordance to six requirements, mentioned above. The remained 25 points are distributed on the essay relevancy to the claimed structure.

In 2019 the topic for essay:
What lessons did the world learn from the experiences of World War I and World War II?
– What led many countries to adopt authoritarian regimes during the 1930s? Why did authoritarian governments seem to pose a solution to economic hardship and social instability?
– What was the relationship between extreme nationalism and the outbreak of World War II?

SUMMARIZING AND AWARDING OF PARTICIPANTS
– The Olympiad Selection Committee distributes Scholarships based on points received for English exam and Mathematics of History (total score);
– Only those candidates who obtain total average score of 50% and above for the sum of scores for English and specialized exam (Mathematics or History) could be awarded scholarships (including those from the wait list).;
– Score on the specialized exam (Mathematics or History) will prevail in determination of the scholarship winners if the total average score of the candidates is equal, meaning that the candidate with the higher score on Mathematics or History will be awarded scholarship;
– Waiting list will be created in order to redistribute unused scholarships. Waiting list is created based on the following criteria: only those applicants from the waiting list will be awarded unused scholarships whose total average score is 50% and above; candidates from the waiting list can be awarded 50% scholarship only;
– The 1st place award (100% scholarship) can be reassigned only to the initial 2nd place winner (the candidate who was awarded 50% scholarship in the first place). In case the second prizewinner also rejects the 100% scholarship, the next candidate from the wait list will be awarded only 50% scholarship. I.e. if both 1st and 2nd places are awarded to the candidates from the wait list then both will be awarded 50% scholarships;
– 100% scholarship for 1st place winners covers 146 credits within 4 AYs, including English Foundation program;
– 50% scholarship for 2d place winners covers 146 credits within 4 AYs, including English Foundation program;
– Scholarships cannot be transferred between programs. Exception: applicants who cannot be admitted to the desired program due to the school subject limitation and UNT requirements (e.g. NISh). These applicants must submit confirmation from school and transfer to the desired program after the 1st semester by fulfilling the MES requirements for transfer between programs. It is responsibility of the winner to be able to fulfill state requirements for transfer after 1st semester; otherwise, the scholarship will be terminated. Terminated scholarships cannot be reassigned;
– Intellectual Olympiad scholarships are regulated by the general Financial Aid rules and maintenance criteria (full-time status, minimum overall GPA requirement, etc.);
– Winners of the Olympiad are required to fulfill admission requirements prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the RK and internal admission policy of the University.

— Certificates of winners of international and/or republican level Olympiads within the recent 3 years, which must be approved according to the order #514 of MES RK from December 7, 2011;
— Preferences will be given to winners of Olympiads in (1) computer science, (2) math, and (3) physics (in this particular order).

II stage:
– Interview in English language

  • 500-1000 word essay in English on topic: “Challenges and opportunities for Central Asia in 21 century: international journalism”. Idea, content and English proficiency will be evaluated;
  • Portfolio:
    – GPA from the last undergraduate degree diploma;
    – Number of additional degree diplomas;
    – Work experience confirmed by official document (confirmation certificate from a work place,, employment record, etc.);
    – Number of professional publications in academic journals and professional magazines, etc.;
    – Certificates for extracurricular achievements;
  • Results of state program exams are “pass/fail” option.

Graduate Scholarship Evaluation Details
Maximum possible evaluation score is 100%: essay – 50%, portfolio – 40% and English language – 10%.
English Proficiency (maximum weight = 10%) KEPT/TOEFL are also acceptable in scores corresponding to the below IELTS levels (but not less than 4.0 in each section).

  • IELTS 4.5-5.0 = 2%;
  • IELTS 5.5-6.0 = 4%;
  • IELTS 6.5-7.0 = 6%;
  • IELTS 7.5-8.0 = 8%;
  • IELTS 8.5-9.0 = 10%;

Essay “Challenges and opportunities for Central Asia in 21 century: each program’s field of study” (maximum weight = 50%);
Two faculty from each program electronically grade the uploaded essays for the content/idea giving 40% out of possible 50% and the rest 10% for English;
Portfolio (maximum weight = 40%, with maximum of 8% in each of 5 sections):
– GPA of the last undergraduate degree diploma. The minimum application requirement is 50%GPA.
